In March 2020 the Chief Medical Officer recommended the temporary suspension of the appraisal process to enable doctors to focus their attention on delivery of care. The period 1st October to 31st December 2020 was designated as an approved missed period, this period has now been extended to the end of March 2021. An approved missed appraisal postpones the appraisal process for 12 months, therefore you would be next expected to undertake appraisal 12 months after your current expected date. Appraisal will be available for those that wish to take up the opportunity to have a supportive discussion with a peer.

If you are a GP and would prefer an approved missed appraisal, please notify the Unit via heiw.appraisalofficer@wales.nhs.uk. Your appraisal account on MARS will be changed in due course to reflect this.

All other doctors that would prefer an approved missed appraisal, please contact your Health Board Revalidation Team.

This resource aims to provide guidance on how medical appraisal can be carried out considerately and effectively with a focus on well-being and support.

It has been developed by the Revalidation Support Unit in collaboration with  Dr Rob Morgan, GP Appraiser and Vice-Chair of RCGP Wales.
