Cancer care
Module created January 2018
Care of people with cancer has been a topic of discussion recently with many organisations aiming to refine the process we work within. The Welsh Government have realised the importance of giving this area attention and in 2015 produced a document ‘Together for Health – Cancer Annual Report’ illustrating their commitment to improving cancer services for people in Wales. This is an educational resource that aims to refresh the profession’s knowledge on diagnosing cancer and educating the public on recognising cancer.
This resource has been compiled by Dr. Anish Kotecha a GP in Cwmbran.
Epidemiology
There are an estimated 2.5 million people in the United Kingdom who are living with cancer (2012) and this figure is expected to continue to rise over the foreseeable future. In 2013, there were over 350, 000 new cases of cancer diagnosed. Unfortunately, around 160,000 people die from cancer every year in the United Kingdom. Conversely, more people are living with and surviving longer with cancer, so consequently face long-term poor health from their cancer or its treatment.
