Arrhythmia

Overview: In this recorded webinar we explore common arrhythmias:

  • AF
  • A Flutter
  • SVTs
  • Paced rhythms

Learning outcomes: We look at what patients present with and how to investigate, paying attention to Red Flags.

Speaker: Dr Eiry Edmunds, Consultant Cardiologist, Hywel Dda UHB.

Facilitated by: Dr Nicola Flower GP CPD Lead.

Atrial Fibrillation

Overview: Atrial Fibrillation is the commonest of all sustained cardiac arrhythmias and affects up to 1% of the adult population rising to nearly 10% of those over the age of 75. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality mainly through enhancing the risk of major strokes which are largely avoidable. In addition to increasing the risk of stroke by up to five times, Atrial Fibrillation also increases the risk of heart failure and vascular dementia and can have a very negative impact on quality of life and lifespan.

This recorded webinar focuses on the updated NICE guidance published April 2021 on the detection, management and shared care approach to patients with AF offering a personalised care plan to those affected. Although most patients with AF will be seen and managed within primary care, the webinar will clarify when and why to refer some patients to specialist services within secondary and tertiary care and what can be offered.

Learning outcomes: Participants will feel increased confidence and competence at dealing with AF and several case studies will be covered.

Speaker: Dr Lena Izzat, Consultant Cardiologist and Atrial Fibrillation Lead, Hywel Dda UHB.

Facilitated by: Dr Nicola Flower GP CPD Lead.

Recorded: January 2022  Duration: 58 Minutes

ECGs

Overview: Do you ever look at ECG and think: ‘No, sorry, no idea’?

Learning outcomes: ECGs often terrify people so we hope this webinar will enable you to understand better the “nuts and bolts” of ECGs and dispel the myth that ECGs are difficult to understand. We will review normal ECGs so that abnormalities can be identified easily and understood.

GP Referrals to Secondary Care

Overview: What a Cardiologist wants to see in a Cardiology Referral.

After nine months of my secondment leading the COVID Cardiology recovery project within Hywel Dda, I have never been in such a privileged vantage point to help me understand our strengths and weaknesses in delivering the optimal Cardiology outpatient service. It is no surprise that the current COVID pandemic has posed a huge challenge to our regular outpatient Cardiology services. However it has also given us a prime opportunity to re-think and redesign what helps our patients make the most of the consultations. We have had a chance to review what worked well and what needed improvement and to learn how to make the most of the various community and in-hospital Cardiac services.

Good quality referrals from primary care are tremendously important to allow safe triage and prioritisation especially when out-patient resources are limited and particularly when most initial consultations are running in a virtual setting. A succinct referral with key points in the history and cardiac examination along with basic but important tests can make all the difference and allow prompt assessments in the best cardiac specialty clinic in a timely fashion.

Learning outcome: This recorded webinar goes through common cardiac presentations and discusses the ideal information needed from your referrals to make the outpatient journey as seamless and beneficial as possible to our patients. We demonstrate what works best through the use of some real case studies. There has never been a more important time for primary and secondary care to work together as we emerge from the pandemic and getting our scheduled care right is a very important step in the right direction.

Heart Failure

Overview: Heart failure affects nearly one million people in the UK and the road to diagnosis is often lengthy and convoluted. The result is a significant cost to the NHS. Heart failure accounts for approximately 2% of the total NHS budget and 5% of unplanned admissions per year. Delays in diagnosis are common but avoidable.

Learning outcomes: We cover Heart Failure (with reduced ejection fraction, primarily) and focus on some of the most recent advances in medical therapy and foster a new way of thinking about the management of Heart Failure focussing on the patient’s quality of life and long term prognosis.
