Referral pathways
Each area has a referral pathway for suspected mouth cancer cases. Use the local pathway and seek help if necessary.
If you suspect mouth cancer, then refer.
If you can refer directly, then:
Refer to a maxillofacial surgery or oral medicine department
Or
Use an urgent suspected cancer pathway
If you cannot refer directly then,
Refer to a dentist or doctor
In all cases:
Mark it as urgent
Follow up the referral (if you have not heard back in 10 days then follow up the case)
Use the correct forms
If you see a lesion or an ulcer but are not immediately suspicious, remember to follow it up to check it has healed. If you are unsure, get a second opinion.
